View of Threadneedle Street
Description
View westwards along Threadneedle Street, City of London. From its junction with Bishopsgate towards the Bank of England which is visible in the far distance. The front façade of 37-38 Threadneedle Street can be seen on the right-hand side of the image. This four-storey building located on the north side of Threadneedle Street was designed by John Macvicar Anderson in Classical Revival style and built in 1902 as the headquarters of the British Linen Company (which became the British Linen Bank in 1906). It replaced South Sea House which had originally been built as the headquarters of the South Sea Company after which it was occupied by the Royal British Bank and then the Baltic Exchange. The arched entrance to 37 Threadneedle Street with relief above can be seen in the foreground and leads to a single-storey lobby. A second entrance (number 38) consisting of two Doric columns with arched pediment can be seen further along. A hanging sign for the 'British Linen Bank' is above. The building was Grade II listed in 1972; listing number 1358899. Beyond this the outer façades of 41 Threadneedle Street and 43-53 Threadneedle Street (Westminster Bank building) can be seen sweeping at a slight curve towards the junction of Old Broad Street. Two sets of traffic lights are visible in the foreground and vehicles, including a taxi and a bus, are in the background. A small part of the grand entrance to 15 Bishopsgate (column and edge of arch only) is visible at the far right of the image.
