View of Threadneedle Street
Description
View eastwards along Threadneedle Street from the south-west corner of the Royal Exchange, City of London. Part of the front façade of the Bank of England can be seen to the left. The Bank of England was originally designed as a three-storey building by Sir John Soane and built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It was completely redesigned as a seven-storey building by architect Herbert Baker in the 1920s and only Soane’s exterior walls were retained. It was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1079134. The Royal Exchange is covered in scaffolding with signage for 'London Stone: cleaning and restoration Co. Ltd' attached. This is the third incarnation of the building (the previous two having been destroyed by fire) and was built in Neo-Classical style to the designs of William Tite in the 1840s. It was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1064713. On the left hand side, beyond the Bank of England is the Sun, Fire and Life Insurance Office at 63 Threadneedle Street. This occupied a corner plot with façades on both Threadneedle Street and Bartholomew Lane and was demolished c1970 to be later replaced by a branch and offices of the Royal Bank of Scotland. A number of taxis, mini vans and pedestrians (some waiting at a bus stop) can also be seen in the image.
