Title
Bank Junction and Royal Exchange
Description
Busy street scene of pedestrians and vehicles taken from the steps of Mansion House, City of London. Looking eastwards towards the front of the Royal Exchange. The Royal Exchange was built to the designs of William Tite in 1841-44 and was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1064713. It has an equestrian statue of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, on a fenced-in plinth outside, which dates to 1844 and is by Chantrey. It was Grade II listed in 1972; listing number 1359168. Vehicles include hackney cabs, a four-wheeled covered cart, open carts, four-wheeled carriages and an omnibus. Passengers on top of the London General Omnibus Company vehicle in the right foreground include males in top hats and two females with parasols or umbrellas. Pedestrians include a lady with a bustled dress crossing the road in the foreground, many men with top hats and some with bowler hats. A number of gas streetlights are visible. To the left is the front façade of The Bank of England which, at this time, was a three-storey building designed by Sir John Soane built in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. It was completely redesigned as a seven-storey building by architect Herbert Baker in the 1920s and only Soane’s exterior walls were retained. It was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1079134. The west end of Threadneedle Street to its junction with Old Broad Street can be seen to the left of the Royal Exchange. The building on the north side of Threadneedle Street, occupying a corner plot with Bartholomew Lane, is 63 Threadneedle Street which was occupied by the Sun Fire Office at this time. This north section of Threadneedle Street would be demolished in the 1970s in an attempt to widen the street.
