Title
Bank of England and Royal Exchange
Description
View from west side of Bank Junction, taken from the steps of Mansion House, looking east towards Threadneedle Street, City of London. The front façade of the Royal Exchange is visible to the right and marks the edge of the photograph. It was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1064713. The front façade and part of the west façade of the Bank of England can be seen to the left. The majority of the original Bank of England building (begun by George Sampson, extended by Sir Robert Taylor and completed by Sir John Soanes) had been demolished in the 1920s, only the original outer wall was retained and incorporated into the much larger new building designed by Sir Herbert Baker (completed 1939). The Bank was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1079134. A traffic island with traffic lights is in the foreground and the subway entrance to Bank underground station is on the far left. A number of pedestrians, including one with top-hat and umbrella, can be seen. Vehicles include two saloon cars, a bus approaching from Threadneedle Street and three vans.
