Title
Buildings in Mitre Street
Description
Front elevations of 3-4 Mitre Street, City of London. Number 4 in the foreground is the premises of R.M. Curtis & Co Ltd. It is propped up by scaffolding where number 5, presumably destroyed in War World II, used to stand; the vacant site is fenced off. On the other side, at number 3 Mitre Street, is the shop front of Renown typewriter service and one of the entrances to Sir John Cass Foundation Primary School, founded in 1709. The current school building, visible here, was built in 1908 by Arthur William Cooksey in the neo-Wren style. It is Grade II* listed, listing number 1285969. Navigation House, a post-war eight-storey office block at 1 Aldgate High Street, is partly visible in the background. Of all these buildings only the school survives, but in 2020 its name was changed to The Aldgate School due to Sir John Cass's links to the transatlantic slave trade. The sites of numbers 4 and 5 Mitre Street are now occupied by the school playground. Navigation House was replaced in 1989 by a modern office block called One Aldgate.
