Title
Monument, 39-43 Monument Street, City of London: looking east to Monument
Description
View along Monument Street, City of London, looking north-west towards the Monument and King William Street. The Monument is an iconic Portland stone column designed by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke to commemorate the Great Fire of London of 1666, which started in Pudding Lane nearby. It is Grade I listed, listing number 1193901. The 1970s building in the background is Faryners House, named after Thomas Farriner in whose bakery the Great Fire started. Cars are parked along the street and two lorries, one of Grosvenor Demolition Rubbish Clearance, stand in front of Masters and Company premises at number 39. Other premises include Lynn and Gibson Ltd at number 41, and Freeman [and Gishford] at 43. These buildings still exist, although some have been renovated and redesigned, and as of 2023 there are plans to redevelop Faryners House. The seven-storey block in the far background has since been replaced by the The Monument Building, an office and retail development. The fenced area on the left has since been redeveloped into Peninsular House, a modern office development at 30-36 Monument Street.
