Building in Royal Exchange Buildings
Description
View of the west elevation of the office block at 1-2 Royal Exchange Buildings, City of London, at the corner of Royal Exchange Avenue. It houses a branch of The First National Bank of Chicago. Built in 1907-10 to designs by Sir Ernest George and Yates and with carvings by Albert Hodge, it is Grade II listed; list entry number 1375282. The drinking fountain was commissioned in 1878 by the Drapers and Merchant Taylors’ Companies and presented to the City of London by John Whittaker-Ellis. The bronze statue of a mother figure with two children is a replacement, as the original marble sculpture deteriorated within a few decades of being unveiled. The drinking fountain was replaced in the 1980s by the statue of George Peabody, the philanthropist who set up the Peabody housing association. Benches and a telephone box can be seen on the pedestrian street, and the facade of 33-35 Cornhill is visible in the background.
