Title
Buildings in Old Broad Street
Description
A View of the fronts of the nineteenth-century buildings at 76-82 Old Broad Street, City of London. Most of the image is dominated by the four-storey Grade II listed Italiantate style 76-80 Old Broad Street of c1860 with it's arched sash windows, triangular window pediments surmounting the first floor windows and arched central entrance between the ground floor shop fronts. Attached to the first floor front are two rectangular signs for the business of Harry Neal who may have been decorating the building. A decorator's ladder can be seen through an open second floor window. On the ground floor at 76-77 Old Broad Street is a snack bar with its menu displayed in the window and a further sign above the large plate glass shop front window offering a take away service. Next door is Kandies newsagents. On the far left at 81 Old Broad Street are the J. L. & N. Gow Ltd Oyster Rooms within a five-storey nineteenth-century building containing Elizabethan inspired and classical features such as the ground floor shop front door frames with triangular pediments, various carved features above the windows and carved piers intersecting some of the windows. On the far right hand side of the photograph is part of the nineteenth-century Railway Tavern public house. Various styles of lanterns can be seen hanging from the ground floor shop fronts including a large brass lantern outside the pub and a modern street light hanging from the end of the third floor of the pub. The street contains pedestrians, a street sign and a one way road sign, cars and a delivery van. The buildings remain with more traditional shop fronts having been added to numbers 76-80.
