Buildings in Old Broad Street
Description
A view of Old Broad Street, City of London looking towards the Victorian Broad Street Station from London Wall. On the right of the picture can be seen the twentieth-century office buildings with ground floor commercial premises built c1960s-1970s which make up 55 Old Broad Street. On ground floor hoarding on the London Wall side of this building can be seen a sign with 'Datum Shopfitting' written on it. On the left of the photograph can be seen a late Victorian five-storey red brick building followed by five-storey italianate style nineteenth-century buildings further down the street. On the ground floor of the buildings can be seen various shops with some shop signs hanging from the fronts of the businesses. One business is that of John Menzies which can be seen on the corner at the turning with London Wall at 94 Old Broad Street. At the end of the street can be seen Broad Street Station which was opened in 1865 and closed in 1986. A London Underground sign can be seen nearby marking the entrance to the underground station. The station was the terminus for the North London Railway. Services were transferred to Liverpool Station in 1986 and the building was demolished and replaced by Broadgate an area containing shops and offices. The image contains pedestrians and a number of vehicles including a black taxi and a lorry at the end of the street. Street furniture includes traffic lights on black and white poles and a Do Not Enter road sign also on a black and white pole. The buildings remain apart from Broad Street Station. On the site of the station has been built a modern glass fronted twenty first-century office block.
