Interior of Capel House in New Broad Street
Description
A view of the entrance and fireplace with clock inside the main ground floor reception area of the Grade II listed Capel House at 58-62 New Broad Street, City of London. Through the 1970s glass doors can be seen the medieveal inspired entrance to the building. Above the double doors is a large wooden frame window containing smaller square panes. The large partially oval shaped marble fireplace to the right of the entrance contains a wooden clock containing an octagonal clock face with roman numerals built into the surround. Either side of the clock on the fireplace surround are thin semi-circular shaped shelves. Below the clock and covering the hole for the grate is an ornate metal fire guard containing the initials of the Essex and Suffolk Equitable Insurance Company who occupied the building in c1910. The fireplace was likely designed by C.F.A. Voysey. On the wall to the left of the fireplace can be seen a fire alarm circular glass panel (with breakable glass and button) and metal circular bell for the alarm above it. The photo was likely taken during re-furbishment work as indicated by the temporary ply wood wall on the left of the entrance with a wire and light bulb extending from the wall. Capel House of 1905-1906 was designed by Paul Hoffman with the ground floor altered by the Arts and Crafts architect C.F.A Voysey in around 1909-1910 for the Essex and Suffolk Equitable Insurance Company. The building survives and became known as Cable House. It is not known if the fireplace and entrance survive.
