Interior of Capel House in New Broad Street
Description
A view of an entrance door to the offices of H. Maclaine & Co. Travel Agents inside the Grade II listed Capel House, 58-62 New Broad Street, City of London. Capel House of 1905-1906 was designed by Paul Hoffman with the ground floor altered by the Arts and Crafts architect C.F.A Voysey in around 1909-1910 for the Essex and Suffolk Equitable Insurance Company. The door at the foot of a staircase is a brown wooden panelled door with four square windows in the top row of 3 rows of panels. Above the door and to the right of the door surmounting the plain wall panelling which covers part of the wall is a flat wooden pediment. The style is in a style reminiscent to the arts and crafts architectural style and is likely part of the interior decoration by the architect C.F.A. Voysey. On the wall to the left of the door is painted wall panelling covering part of the wall. Attached to the wall can be seen a fire alarm panel. Attached to the door is a name plaque for 'H. Maclaine & Co..'. To the right of the door is a black name plate for the company with text and an arrow giving direction to the 'Mezzanine Floor' underneath the company's name. A metal hand rail rises up the stairs and above that is a wooden framed window. The floor is covered with plain white tiles. The interior of Capel House now known as Cable House has been re-furbished with a modern twenty first-century interior with some of the original features still remaining. It is not known if the door and wall panelling still remain.
