Interior of Capel House in New Broad Street
Description
A view of the inside of the front office at the Grade II listed Capel House, 58-62 New Broad Street, City of London. Capel House of 1905-1906 was designed by Paul Hoffman with the ground floor altered by the Arts and Crafts architect C.F.A Voysey c1909-1910 for the Essex and Suffolk Equitable Insurance Company. The view shows an office of the 1970s with two painted wooden or metal desks with wooden handles. Covering the desks can be seen what is possibly a paper company seal stamp press (on the right desk), bakelite telephones, paperwork and a parcel with address label visible. The room contains various 1970s metal framed office chairs with fabric covered cushions. On a pull out drawer at the side of the desk on the left can be seen a white plastic cup. At the side of the office are metal filing cabinets with a metal wire paper tray on top. Through the arch at the back of the office can be seen a metal cabinet and a map hanging from the side wall. The windows are made of thick frosted glass blocks. One of the windows includes a framed pane of stained glass which can be opened, containing what is likely a Liver Bird with 'Liverpool' written underneath it. Underneath the window is an electric radiator. The walls of the office contain half length wooden panels. The fireplace on the back wall consists of vertical black and white lined tiles possibly designed by C.F.A. Voysey. On the small plinth on the fireplace surround is a calendar containing signs of the zodiac and hanging on the wall above the fireplace is a framed picture of a ship. A modern striplight hangs from the ceiling. Capel House now known as Cable House still exists but with a new twenty first-century interior with a few original features remaining but it is not known if features in the photograph survive.
