Title
Interior of building in Old Jewry
Description
A view of the inside of the front room on the first floor of the Grade II listed 35 Old Jewry, City of London, which was originally designed by James Adam for Brothers & Self in c1775. The room shows evidence of renovation work. The floor boards have been removed and the floor joists can be seen under the loose wooden planks which cover the floor. On the planks can be seen old rags and pieces of paper as can a large wooden ladder placed on its side. On the left of the room can be seen an upturned wooden plan chest with a leopard skin patterned bag or coat on the top. On the left hand wall is a marble fire place with a board over the grate. On the mantel piece can be seen a sign with 'Transfers & Enquiries' written on it. On the far wall are three sets of windows containing double doors, two of which are opening into the room. Hanging from a painted wooden pelmet above each of the window frames are patterned curtains pulled back against the wall with curtain tiebacks. The partly damaged eighteenth-century plaster ceiling surrounded by a decorated cornice shows various patterns and decoration common to Georgian interiors and especially to the work of the Adam Brothers. Such features include elements of classical architecture such as moulded vines and foliage and sunburst patterned circular ceiling rose. A large hole can be seen in part of the ceiling with wooden slats under the plaster appearing through the hole. Around the room can also be seen dado rails and a bare electrical wire hangs from the light fitting in the centre of the ceiling. The building remains but it is not known how much of the original interior survives.
