Description
A view of the Grade II listed Britannia House at 16-17 Old Bailey, City of London, and the side wall of the neighbouring seven-storey Victorian building. The seven-storey building was designed for the Chatham and Dover Railway Company by Arthur Usher of Yetts, Sturdy and Usher of London in 1912. The building is in the Edwardian baroque style with elements of french architectural styles such as the mansard roof. Features include triangular pediments on the windows containing small square panes and carved festooned foliage leading to oval or stretched medallions surmounted by unusual carved faces between the third floor windows. Above the entrance is a broken pediment with statues either side depicting travel. The statue of the woman on the left holds a wheel depicting rail travel and the woman on the right leans on an anchor depicting sea travel. At the bottom of brackets on the two piers either side of the entrance are small carved lion heads. Set into the entrance are decorated double metal gates. The ground floor windows are half covered with boards some of which have the remains of posters on them. Scaffolding covers the ground floor and side of the building and most of the building's windows which open outwards are open. Two four door saloon cards are parked at the front of the building. The building which overlooks the Central Criminal Court and the neighbouring building still survive.
