Capel Housein New Broad Street
Description
A view of the front of the Grade II listed Capel House, 58-62 New Broad Street, City of London. Capel House of 1905-1906 was designed by Paul Hoffman with the ground floor altered by the Arts and Crafts architect C.F.A Voysey in around 1909-1910 for the Essex and Suffolk Equitable Insurance Company. The building contains neo-classical features such as triangular pediments above some of the windows, ornate door surrounds and sash window common in many buildings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries. A street light contaning the City of London shield can be seen attached to the first floor on the far left of the photograph. The ground floor contains horizontal stone cladding and the majority of the ground floor windows consist of small panes of frosted glass. On one side nearest the front of the photograph and to the left of the entrence along the top of the ground floor windows, is written the name of the company occupying part of the building: 'Freight & Passengeer Agents H. Maclaine & Co. ...' Various vehicles line the street and three parking meters can be seen beside them. The cars include a Morris Minor Traveller, a Ford Corina, possibly a Jaguar sports car and a Ford Anglia. The building has been re-furbished and is now known as Cable House.
