Interior of Capel House in New Broad Street
Description
A view of the fireplace inside the back room of the Grade II listed Capel House at 58-62 New Broad Street, City of London. Capel House of 1905-1906 was designed by Paul Hoffman with the ground floor altered by the Arts and Crafts architect C.F.A Voysey in around 1909-1910 for the Essex and Suffolk Equitable Insurance Company who occupied the building. The plain coloured fireplace designed by C.F.A. Voysey displays the medieval design features associate with the Arts and Crafts movement including two ornate crosses on either side of the top of the fireplace with a partially arched mantel piece. Black and white vertical lined tiles flank and sit above an iron grate which was likely to have been made by Thomas Elsley Ltd. A metal shovel (for cleaning the grate) on a metal stand also likely to have been designed by Voysey and made by Thomas Elsey Ltd. is on the left of the semi-circular shaped hearth. A loose print of a bridge has been placed within the grate. Wires of an electric radiator are draped across the grate. A patterned carpet surrounds the hearth. On the far left of the room is a plain panelled wooden built in cupboard also in the arts and crafts style and likely by Voysey. An electric fan is on top of the cupboard and metal horizontal blinds can be seen on the window on the right. The building survives and is now known as Cable House. It is not known if the fire place survives.
