Buildings in Old Broad Street
Description
A view of 118-122 Old Broad Street, City of London, showing the imposing, four-storey Italianate style nineteenth-century Midland Bank Ltd. on the left at 119-122 Old Broard Street with its rows of arched sash windows and tall arched ground floor windows. The neighbouring five-storey bank at 118 Old Broad Street was built early c1920s in a style consisting of features associated with the Beau Arts style of architecture. The ground floor has been clad in granite and has metal framed windows and a wooden entrance with lattice window panes. A number of the windows in the upper levels are open including some upper level lattice paned windows. Carved garlands of foliage surmount the window frames on the first floor and flank those on the second. A flag pole extends from the second floor. Next door at 117 Old Broad Street is the entrance to the early twentieth-century italianate styled bank building with its ornate fanlight above the entrance and pediment above the first floor window. Victorian buildings in Throgmorton Street can be seen in the distance on the left of the picture. A number of pedestrians can be seen in the street including men in suits and ties with two in trilby hats and a woman in a pale coloured dress. Extending across the street is a street decoration with lights attached to it possibly a Christmas decoration from the previous year. Numbers 117-118 Old Broad Street no longer survive having been replaced in 1998 by the modern style office block design by Foggo Associates at what is now 111 Old Broad Street. The Midland Bank building was replaced by a new building in a traditional nineteenth and early twentieth-century bank architectural style in c1993.
