View of Threadneedle Street
Description
A view of the end of Threadneedle Street, City of London looking into Old Broad Street, City of London, going from 54 Threadneedle Street then from 82 to 73 Old Broad Street. The business of William Johnson & Son, Chronometer Makers at 54 Threadneedle Street can be seen on the far left. Adjacent to this business can be seen the Yorkshire Insurance Company at 82 Old Broad Street. Next to this is the London Stock Exchange going from 74 to 76 Old Broad Street. In the distance at 65 Old Broad Street can be seen the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London & China. The buildings in the street date from around the early nineteenth-century and contain sash windows some of which are open at 54 Threadneedle Street and 82 Old Broad Street. The street is filled with pedestrians wearing suits, silk top hats, straw boaters and bowler hats. Children can also be seen in the photo. Hanson Cabs and a horse drawn delivery van containing wooden crates can also be seen towards the end of the street. Scaffolding and a winch can be seen on the top of the Stock Exchange and a street gas lamp is on the right hand side of the street. A small number of the original buildings on the right of the street and at the end of Old Broad Street survive. The buildings shown on the left hand side of the street leading to the turning into Throgmorton Street have been replaced by Sixty Theadneedle Street a modern office block designed by Eric Parry Architects in c2007 and the former Stock Exchange Tower later re-named 125 Old Broad Street, originally built in 1970 by Trollope & Colls and altered c2007. The Stock Exchange left the site and moved to Paternoster Square in 2004.
