Description
A view of Newgate Street, City of London from Old Bailey, City of London. On the left is the Grade II listed Viaduct Tavern at 126 Newgate Street, built in 1874-1875 in the Italianate style. The pub's curved brick and granite front contains window awnings, iron bracketed gas lanterns and a gilt sign stating 'J Cartwright & Son Wine & Spirit Dealer. Attached to the second floor are large letters spelling out the pub's name. In the distance can be seen the tower of Sir Christopher Wren's St Vedast, Foster Lane (built 1695 to 1701). The stone bricked wall of George Dance's Newgate Prison of c1782 with its classical features can be seen on the right. Three-storey Victorian buildings neighbouring the pub, one with a 'To Let' sign attached to it, are in a similar architectural style and house businesses such as C. Brandauer & Co. steel pen manufacturers at 124 Newgate Street. The busy street is filled with pedestrians including a uniformed policeman, a road sweeper carrying a long handled broom, a 'City gent' in frock coat and silk top hat and on the right a boot polisher. On the left can be seen a woman wearing a long black puff sleeved dress with a man with a moustache wearing a bowler hat, suit, bow tie with a watch chain on his waist coat. Two delivery men including one wearing an apron can be seen pushing barrows containing wooden crates. The street contains various street gas lamps. Various vehicles fill the image including horse drawn delivery vans and carts and two horse drawn omnibuses filled with commuters in various types of hats and one carrying a parasol. An advert for 'Nestles Milk' is attached to one of the omnibuses. The Viaduct Tavern and many of the neighbouring buildings have survived. The Central Criminal Court replaced Newgate Prison in 1902.
