View of Old Bailey
Description
A view of Old Bailey, City of London looking towards Ludgate Hill. E.W. Mountford's Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) on the left hand side was built in 1902 on the site of Newgate Prison. Scaffolding with the scaffolder's name 'Wallis' attached to it covers part of the building. The neighbouring site where a demolished building once stood (the floor markings visible on the side wall) was later filled with Donald McMorran and George Whitby's Central Criminal Court's south block extension of 1968 to 1972. The front of The George public house (possibly nineteenth-century) on the right hand side contains a Victorian lantern, net curtained windows and is surmounted by a triangular pediment containing the carved pub's name. The front of the neighbouring late nineteenth-century 23-24 Old Bailey housing Bury & Masco Industries Ltd has carved foliage on the stone work and a large business sign. Behind the George can be seen the top of a 1960s office block (possibly 30 Old Bailey). In the distance in Ludgate Hill can also be seen the imposing Grade ll listed bank building at 45-47 Ludgate Hill built by Thomas Edward Collcutt in 1891. Various four door saloon cars, a mini, and a Ford Anglia and delivery van for N. Francis & Co. Ltd Carriers (both by 23-24) can be seen in the street. An advertisement for 'New Zealand Butter & Cheese' can be seen on the side of the van. Pedestians and street furniture such as parking meters and a metal no entry road sign by Fleet Lane (behind The George) can be seen in the photo. The Central Criminal Court survives but The George and 23-24 Old Bailey have been replaced by 'Twenty Old Bailey' a 1980s office block (re-modelled in 2017). Fletcher Priest and Sauerbruch Hutton's Mizuho House (built c2015) has replaced the 1960s office block behind The George.
