Warehouses in New Street
Description
A view 10-12 New Street, City of London and the Cutler Street Warehouses, New Street, City of London. The Grade II listed eighteenth-century six-storey Cutler Street Warehouses (end of the street), originally built for the East India Company and later taken over by the Port of London Authority after c1909 once stored high end goods such as ostrich feathers, cigars, silks, tea, china, perfumes and clocks. The warehouses contain rows of smaller paned windows, stone dressings either side of the ground floor window arches and above the entrance, a large Georgian window frame surmounted by a triangular pediment. Above the arched entrance within which can be seen the back of a delivery van is a large sign which reads 'Port of London Authority Cutler Street Warehouses'. The neighbouring four storey early nineteenth century brick built warehouses at 10-11 New Street on the left of the picture contain trap doors for taking in stock and top floor arched windows. Railings can be seen around the basement windows. At number 10 a luminous business sign reads 'Willis Computer Supplies'. On the second floor window at number 11 can be seen a crane for taking in stock. The front of the Magpie public house at 12 New Street (end of the street) contains gas lamps and a pub sign depicting a mapgpie. Black and white bollards and a parking meter can also be seen in the picture. Vehicles in the street include two motorbikes, one possibly for deliveries and another covered in a protective sheet and a large four door jaguar. The buildings have survived having been changed into offices and apartments in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Magpie pub was re-furbished and became a Nicholson's pub with the same name.
