Title
Site of Winchester House in Old Broad Street
Description
A view of the site of the demolished Winchester House, 96-104 Old Broad Street, City of London, showing various vans including one for the demolition company Valori Demolition and on the right of the site, the arm of a crane. Surrounding the vans are the ruins and remains of Winchester House which was originally designed by Frederick Thomas Pilkington and built in c1886. A previous Winchester House built by the Marquis of Winchester prior to his death in 1572 once stood on this site. On the corner of Great Winchester Street on the right of the photo can be seen Victorian buildings including a bank at 106 Old Broad Street and the neighbouring back of Pinners Hall. Dominating the photograph can be seen the imposing Goodenough House at 33-41 Old Broad Street, a modern office block built in c1960 which was once occupied by Barclays Bank, the crest of which can be seen carved into the stone cladding on the front of the building. Goodenough House was demolished c1992 when it was replaced by a modern office block designed by EPR Architects Ltd. To the right of this building can be seen the end of Gresham House, 24 Old Broad Street designed by W.T. Hanman and built in 1920 and which was later demolished and replaced with Tower 42 (formerly National Westminster Tower) in the 1970s. The bank on the corner of Great Winchester Street was also eventually replaced by the modern office block (built c1990s or c2000s) called Pinners Hall at 105-108 Old Broad Street. Between 1996 and 1999 a large office building containing ground floor commercial premises and re-named Winchester House by Swanke Hayden Connell Architects - SHCA was built on the site.
