Title
Winchester House in Old Broad Street
Description
A view of Winchester House at 96-104 Old Broad Street, City of London, during the early stages of demolition. This large building designed by Frederick Thomas Pilkington dating from c1886 stretched from London Wall to Great Winchester Street. The earlier Marquis of Winchester's Winchester House (pre 1572) once stood on the site. The view shows the two sides of the building either side of the corner entrance at 96 Old Broad Street where Old Broad Streets meets London Wall. Scaffolding covers the Old Broad Street side of the building while the entrance and London Wall side display features of the Beau Arts architectural style. The building's curved, stepped entrance containing sliding metal gates is flanked by classical doric columns. In-set into the arched stone window frame above the entrance is a clock with large statues flanking the stone dressing above it. A flag pole can be seen below the open window. A sign above the entrance gives the name of the demolition company stating 'Demolition Valori'. Winchester House once contained businesses such as Saint Line Ltd ship owners. Behind the building can be seen one of the 1960s office blocks which lined London Wall. On the street is a set of black and white traffic lights, a black and white directions street sign and an open topped lorry. In the distance can be seen the front of the City of London Club at 19 Old Broad Street which still exists. Between 1996 and 1999 a large office building (with ground floor commercial premises) re-named Winchester House designed by Swanke Hayden Connell Architects - SHCA was built on the site. On the site of the building's entrance was placed a branch of HSBC UK (ground floor commercial premises). Late twentieth-century office blocks have replaced many of the buildings in the street.
