Warehouses in New Street
Description
A view of Teetgens Tea Warehouse at 16 New Street, City of London, with the Port of London Authority Warehouses at the end of the street. The six-storey brick built wareshouses originally built for the East India Company in the eighteenth century and later taken over by the Port of London Authority after c1909 once stored high end goods such as ostrich feathers, cigars, silks, tea, china, perfumes and clocks. On each floor of the building can be seen doors for taking in deliveries of goods. Bordering the courtyards in front of the warehouses is a brick wall containing a number of delivery gates. Fronting the warehouse beside the brick wall are three large bricked up arched windows surrounded by stone wall dressings. The largest gate in the wall closest to the foreground consists of double folding metal doors and has the sign 'Teetgen's Warehouse' above it. At the end of New Street is an archway to the Cutler Street (Port of London Authority) Warehouses with a Georgian window surmounted by a triangular pediment above it. Part of the 'Port of London Authority Cutler Street Wareshoues' sign can be seen above the arch. Another sign on one of the warehouses states 'Acquired Ashby'. The street contains two vehicles including a four door saloon car by the warehouse entrance. In the 1970s and 1980s the Grade II listed warehouses were converted into offices and restaurants such as the 'Fish Market' at number 16 New Street and apartments such as Tapestry Building also at 16 New Street. Metal railings replaced the wall of Teetgens Tea Warehouse. The three arched bricked in windows have been opened up to create the windows and entrance to the 'New St Grill' restaurant.
