Buildings in Old Jewry
Description
A view of number 35 Old Jewry, City of London and 7 - 8 Frederick's Place, City of London (evident at the side of number 35). The building which still survives and makes up the properties at 35 and 7 to 8 was originally designed by James Adam for Brothers & Self in c1775 and is Grade II listed. Evident in the brick built building are large Georgian sash windows and evidence of nineteenth-century alterations. The door at the side of the building in Frederick's Place shows an eighteenth-century door frame with arch and flat pediment with cornice surmounting the door frame. At the end of number 35 on the side going towards Cheapside are evident large 19th century glass windows which were added to the earlier 18th century building. Adjacent to number 35 is the early twentieth-century office building now known as Becket House at numbers 36 and 37 Old Jewry with design features similar to those used by the architect Edwin Lutyens. On the site of this building was once the church of St Mary Cole Church which was destroyed during the Great Fire of 1666. On the corner of Frederick's Place and Old Jewry can be seen a red post box with two slots. Outside the entrance to no. 7 Frederick's Place can be seen two metal dust bins. The buildings in the photographs still survive but the tall 5 storey Victorian building in Cheapside at the far left of the photograph has been replaced by a modern style office block. Numbers 36 to 37 Old Jewry at the left hand side of the picture has been cleaned and new windows have been added.
