Interior of The Bridewell Royal Hospital New Bridge Street
Description
A view of the large marble fire place inside the first floor Court room at the former offices of The Bridewell Royal Hospital at the Grade II* 14 New Bridge Street, City of London. The Court room which was installed in the building in 1862 was used for meetings of the governing body of The Bridewell Royal Hospital's Court of governors (the governing body of King Edward's School, Witley and Barrow Hills School, Witley). The ornate marble fire place is surmounted by a triangular pediment containing the coat of arms of The Bridewell Royal Hospital which is also the badge of King Edward's School, Witley. The plain coloured yet ornately decorated fire place contains various motifs including what appears to be fruit and shell shaped objects and foliage. In the middle of the fire place is marble slab possibly providing a record of the founding of The Bridewell Royal Hospital. At the bottom of the fire place is an ornate fire surround wihth a pain metal grate containing logs of wood. Just in front of the fire place can be seen the edge of a floral persian rug. Surrounding the fire place is wood pannelling. Just above the pannelling and fire place can be seed the picture frame and name plate for Solomon J. Solomon's painting of 1898 titled, 'On The Threshold of The City'. The building which was originally built in c1805 and designed by James Lewis is no longer used as the offices of The Bridewell Royal Hospital but has since been occupied by the offices of Bark & Co. Solicitors. The building is now known as Bridewell Court, 14 New Bridge Street. It is not known whether the interior decorations shown in the image have survived. The whereabouts of the painting 'On The Threshold of The City' is unknown.
