Title
Interior of The Bridewell Royal Hospital New Bridge Street
Description
An interior view showing the vaulted corridor leading from the gated entrance to the double panelled door of the reception area of the former offices of The Bridewell Royal Hospital at 14 New Bridge Street, City of London. On the left of the image is visible the panelled gate surmounted by iron spikes which fills half of the arch within which it is set. The image is dominated by the plain vaulted corridor with a foot wiping mat and large flag stones on the floor. On the right of the image is the entrance to the reception area consisting of a Regency style double set of wooden framed doors within a wooden door frame topped by a cornice surmounted by a large ornate fan light. On both doors just above the doors' two metal hand plates are two large metal knockers which appear to be in the shape of wreaths. On one of the door is a sign stating that the door leads to the Reception area. On either side of the door frame can be seen just above the door step, pieces of metal used for wiping mud off boots. Extending fom the top of the door frame is one of the metal arms leading to a large metal lamp suspended from the ceiling and which has a second metal arm holding it in place. The lamp which contains an electric light bulb would likely have once been powered by either candle or gas light. The building which was originally built in c1805 and designed by James Lewis is no longer used as the offices of The Bridewell Royal Hospital but has since been occupied by the offices of Bark & Co. Solicitors. The building is now known as Bridewell Court, 14 New Bridge Street. It is likely that the interior depicted in the photograph remains much the same.
