Interior of The Bridewell Royal Hospital New Bridge Street
Description
A view of the interior of the first floor Court room of The Bridewell Royal Hospital at their former offices at the Grade II* listed 14 New Bridge Street, City of London. The Court room which was installed in the building in 1862 is lit by three arched Regency style sash windows, with wood panelling covering half of each wall is filled with tables and Regency style chairs a large portion of which are arranged in a square for meetings of the Court of The Bridewell Royal Hospital (governing body of King Edward's School, Witley and Barrow Hills School, Witley). Around the walls are various full length painted portraits of what appear to be past Lord Mayor's of London. Also around the room are boards possibly containing the engraved names of the Governors of The Bridewell Royal Hospital. Hanging from a large ornate circular ceiling rose in the centre of the ceiling is a large two tiered brass chandelier. On the left hand side of the room can be seen a set of double panelled wooden doors with a large grandfather clock nearby in the corner of the room. Under of the middle of the three arched sash windows can be seen a plain marble fire place containing its grate. The building which was originally built in c1805 and designed by James Lewis is no longer used as the offices of The Bridewell Royal Hospital but has since been occupied by the offices of Bark & Co. Solicitors. The building is now known as Bridewell Court, 14 New Bridge Street. It is not known how much of the interior of the Court room has survived.
