View of Old Change
Description
A view of Old Change, City of London as seen from Knightrider Street, City of London. The view includes pedestrians wearing pre First World War dress such as men in cloth caps, bowler hats and a man wearing a straw boater carrying two large parcels. In the distance can be seen the spire of Sir Christopher Wren's St Augustine Watling Street of 1683. Various signs can be seen on the buildings such as on the left, an 'Offices to Let' by Old Change House, an office building at 21A Old Change. This building contained various businesses whose name plates appear by the entrance such as that for S. M. Syer & Co. silk agents. On the right can be seen the business of Ernest Dieckmann, lace manufacturer at 21 Old Change whose business sign hangs from the top of the building. Next door is the Crown and Sceptre public house at 22 Old Change, which in 1912 was run by George Henry Fryer. A flower box and large lantern can be seen above the pub's entrance with the pub sign with 'Crown & Sceptre Bass On Draught' written on it hanging above the first floor window. Further down on the right can be seen a crane or winch for bringing stock into the warehouse on the second floor of number 25. Three businesses were based at 25 Old Change including that of Edmund Hornsby & Sons, packers. At the side of this business can also be seen a large gas lamp. At the end of the street attached to 26 Old Change, the business of Higgins, Eagle & Co. Ltd. lace manufacturers, can be seen unusual window screens hanging above the windows. The soft roof of a delivery van can be seen in the distance by Cannon Street. Due to World War II bombing Old Change no longer exists. The Festival Gardens are now on the site of the street with the surviving tower of St Augustine's Watling Street nearby.
