Title
London Coal Exchange in Lower Thames Street
Description
A view of the London Coal Exchange on the corner of Lower Thames Street and St Mary at Hill, City of London. The third exchange on the site was designed in the Italianate style with a semi-circular portico and Doric columns on the south-west corner. The building was one of the first constructed largely from cast iron and was opened in 1949 by Prince Albert. Despite being Grade II listed, it was demolished in 1962 to allow the widening of Lower Thames Street. The two cast iron dragons from above the entrance were resited to the Victoria Embankment to mark the City boundary. The site is now occupied by an office block.
