The view is relatively unrestricted due to gaps left by the many buildings destroyed during the bombing of World War II. The Grade II listed, listing number 1079124 memorial, dating from 1833, was moved to the square from near Waithman's shop in Fleet Street at the junction with Farringdon Street in 1951, since moved again c1975 to its present position in Salisbury Square. Vehicles parked around the memorial's traffic island includes a Hillman Husky, an Austin 10 van, Standard 8 and Vanguard Phase 1A saloons, and Ford Anglia E494A, Prefect E93A and Zodiac Mark II models.
