Blackfriars Road, including Surrey Chapel
Description
View of Blackfriars Road, including Surrey Chapel, 196 Blackfriars Road. Pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles. The Surrey Chapel (1783-1881) was an independent Methodist and Congregational church established by the Rev. Rowland Hill. He is said to have explained that the building was round to stop the Devil from hiding in any corners. Like his associate Edward Jenner, he did much pioneering work in the field of vaccination. The building was purchased by former British lightweight champion Dick Burge and his wife Bella in 1910 who turned it into 'The Ring', an important indoor boxing venue. The building was seriously damaged during a Second World War bombing raid and was eventually demolished.
