Argyle Estate: residential tenements
Description
The Argyle Estate was built by the London County Council (LCC) on a site between Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon Common. It was completed in 1956, comprising 13 five- and six-storey blocks. The estate was praised in Pevsner’s County Survey of Surrey, which stated that “nothing so modern would have been allowed" inside the county of Surrey proper. Landscaping was central to the impact of the Argyle Estate, as it was on the Ackroydon Estate nearby. Features like the pond and the surrounding trees embedded the buildings within the site and provided a refreshing view from the balconies of the flats.
