Ackroydon Estate: completed housing development
Description
This photograph of the grounds of the Ackroydon Estate was taken shortly after the estate was completed in 1953. Designed by Robert Matthew and his housing team in the London County Council Architect’s Department, the estate was a prototype for the Alton Estate in Roehampton. Inspired by similar blocks in Sweden, the key innovation they tested was the ‘point’ block. Three eleven-storey ‘T’ shaped blocks were built on the estate including Oatlands Court, which can be seen on the right of the photograph.

One of the advantages of these blocks was that more people could be housed without building over open green space; each block occupied little more ground than the Victorian villas they replaced. The layout on the Ackroydon Estate was the responsibility of Arthur G. Ling, who later became City Architect for Coventry. Before he started, Ling made “a complete survey of the site including the position, size and condition of all trees, landscape and garden features”. While over 400 mature trees were preserved, the architects also added details like this pavilion. In contrast to the concrete point block to the right, the stone walls and thatched roof fit into the natural landscape of the site.
