View of Redcross Street
Description
Illustration from "Cripplegate Ward" by J.J. Baddeley (1921), showing Redcross Street, City of London, looking north from the turning out of Fore Street (right, out of view). The horse and carriage on the left is emerging from Jewin Street, at the northeast corner of which are the premises of the Associated Fire Alarm Company. The inscription around the clock reads, ‘I.P. Absolutely reliable’. In the foreground right, opposite the exit from Jewin Street, is the LCC Redcross Street Fire Station, built in 1900. Beyond the Fire Station, right, is the Midland Railway Goods Depot, opened in 1874, which had access to the Metropolitan Railway (running east-west beneath the street) and had another, grander eastern entrance in Whitecross Street. In the distant background is the Cripplegate Institute, Golden Lane, the only structure that still exists. People and a horse-drawn carriage are in view.
