View of Milton Street
Description
Illustration from "Cripplegate Ward" by J.J. Baddeley (1921), showing Milton Street, City of London, looking north from just north of the junction with Chapel Street (to the west). Beyond the horse and carriage on the left is the junction with Silk Street, beyond which in turn are the premises of the Whitbread Brewery. On the right, opposite the turning into Silk Street, is the entrance to Hanover Court where, in 1889, a fire engulfed the premises of an old firm of soap-makers. A new row of warehouses was subsequently built on the western side of the street, many of which were occupied by soft goods wholesalers. Apart from the section which bounds the eastern side of Whitbread Brewery, Milton Street no longer exists, the remainder of its old route now submerged beneath the Barbican development.
