Hutton Residential School (also known as Hutton Poplars), Poplar Drive, Hutton: assembly hall.
Hutton Poplars Children’s Home opened in 1906. George Lansbury, actress Angela Lansbury’s grandfather, campaigned to have the home built in Poplar. Queen Mary visited in 1918. Hutton could accommodate 432 children, aged 0 to 15 years old. It was built in the cottage homes model, where children were looked after in family sized group homes run by house parents. It was laid out like a village with a central green with schoolhouses on either side. There was an administrative block, swimming pool, gymnasium, infirmary and farm buildings. Between 1930 and 1965, the home was run by the London County Council (L.C.C.). The home closed in 1982. Most of the buildings have been demolished and replaced with housing. However, the main school building has survived and is now Bishops Hill Adult Community College. The Dining Hall has been restored by Brentwood Borough Council and is now available for private hire.
