Description
Leytonstone Children's Home: chapel

Leytonstone House is an eighteenth-century mansion, formerly the family home of Sir Edward North Buxton (1812 - 1858), 2nd Baronet of Bellfield and Runton. He belonged to the philanthropic Buxton brewing family. In 1868 Leytonstone House and grounds were purchased by the Bethnal Green Board of Guardians and became Bethnal Green School for the Juvenile Poor. This was later known as Leytonstone Children's Home and came under the London County Council (LCC) from 1930 before closing in 1936.

It re-opened in April 1937 as Leytonstone House Hospital. Originally for female psychiatric patients, it was later adapted to cater for male and juvenile patients as well. In 1983 the hospital was earmarked for a phased closure and was gradually vacated, finally closing in May 1994.

Leytonstone House once stood in the High Road but that part has now been renamed Hanbury Drive. The House has been Grade II listed since 1954. List Entry Number: 1065588.

Most of the site is now occupied by a supermarket complex along with other retail outlets, homes and offices.
