Description
View of buildings on both sides of Strand, Covent Garden, looking east from Duncannon Street. The street comprises largely commercial buildings of about four storeys. At the left is a building with a double curved facade housing a bank at number 449 Strand and West Strand Telegraph Office at 448. These buildings form part of a triangular island block of shops and offices between Strand, Adelaide Street and William IV Street (formerly King William Street). It was built in 1830-32 as part of the West Strand Improvements, planned by architect John Nash and executed by William Herbert. Number 448-449 are circular corner pavilions, known as "pepper pots", with three storeys and an attic with a balustrade. They have cast-iron balconies around the first floor. The telegraph office was the 'Central Station' of the Electric Telegraph Company, which was established in 1846 to connect major cities and towns by electric telegraph. The triangular block was Grade II* listed in 1969; listing number 1237040. Many horse-drawn hansom cabs and carts can be seen as well a bus of the London General Omnibus Company plying between Waterloo Station and Camden Town to the right. A driver sits at the front of the open upper deck where some passengers can also be seen. At the right, several lamps mark the forecourt to Charing Cross Hotel and Station. A sign at the top of the side elevation of 32 Strand on the right reads "Chapple & Mantell", silversmiths specialising in early-Georgian reproduction silverware. Buildings on the right no longer exist because of redevelopment and later commercial blocks occupy the sites.
