Title
St Mary le Strand church in Strand
Description
View of St Mary le Strand church and buildings on both sides of Strand, Covent Garden. The picture shows many pedestrians, cars, vans and taxis. A sign on the church refers to £1,000, probably a fund-raising target. Buildings on the right were created as part of a programme to widen Strand and create Aldwych in the early-twentieth century. On the far right of the picture, part of the offices of the Australian state of Victoria can be seen. In the centre is Bush House, the headquarters building of the BBC World Service from 1940 to 2014, housing all the BBC’s foreign language services. The Portland stone building has six storeys plus an attic. A pediment tops the central range of the building. Dating from 1714-17 and designed by James Gibbs, St Mary le Strand church was Grade I listed in 1958; listing number 1236753. Dating from 1925-35 and designed by the American architect Harvey Wiley Corbett, Bush House was Grade II listed in 1976; listing number 1066492. It was conceived by American industrialist Irving T. Bush, who raised the funds for its construction and after whom it is named.
