Royal Courts of Justice in Strand
Description
View of the front elevation of The Royal Courts of Justice in Strand, Covent Garden. The image shows the central hall building, which is gradually stepped back from the street line. At the centre of this grouping is a large, recessed portal with a carved arch, flanked by granite columns. Above is a miniature open arcade. The southern gable end of the central hall is placed behind and has a five-light window in a richly-carved surround and a rose window to the gable. The apex carries a sculpture of Christ the Law Giver. Behind is a spire. One of the jewels of the High Victorian Gothic Revival, a large, national courtroom building of 1874 to 1883, designed and built by George Edmund Street and completed by Arthur E. Street and Sir Arthur Blomfield. Built predominantly in Portland stone, it was Grade I listed in 1970; listing number 1264258. A few pedestrians are walking in the street and an Austin FX4 London taxi is partially seen at the left. In the foreground is an ornate lamp standard with four lights on scroll brackets and a fifth above. Described as a lamp standard-ventilator, it was made by Walter Macfarlane & Co. at the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow. Dating from the late-nineteenth century, it was Grade II listed in 1970; listing number 1264443. It stands on a traffic island occupied by the church of St Clement Danes. Striped bollards edge the island. Railings surround separate entrances to men's and women's toilets underground.
