Description
View of St Mary le Strand church and buildings on both sides of Strand, Covent Garden. The picture shows many pedestrians, horse-drawn carts, buses and carriages. Many of the buildings have four or five storeys and have shops on the ground floor. Several hansom cabs can be seen. In the foreground is a horse-drawn bus with male passengers crowded on the top deck, several wearing top hats. Dating from 1714-17 and designed by James Gibbs, St Mary le Strand church was Grade I listed in 1958; listing number 1236753. Apart from the church, the buildings no longer exist because of redevelopment, those on the left having been lost in creation of Aldwych and widening of Strand in the early-twentieth century. To the right is a line of street lamps. Signs on the right advertise The Gaiety Toilet Club offering shampooing for four pence on the first floor.
