Title
St Mary le Strand church in Strand
Description
View of St Mary le Strand church and buildings on both sides of Strand, looking east from Catherine Street. The picture shows many pedestrians, horse-drawn carts, buses and carriages. Several hansom cabs can be seen. Many of the buildings have four or five storeys and have shops on the ground floor. To the right is a line of street lamps. Signs on the right advertise The Gaiety Toilet Club offering shampooing for four pence on the first floor of 143 Strand. The building also houses The Yachtsman magazine. Businesses on the left include Jones's watch manufactory at 338 Strand and Hetherington's travel agency. At 337 is The Social Democratic Federation, which was established in 1881 as Britain's first organised socialist political party. Dating from 1714-17 and designed by James Gibbs, St Mary le Strand church was Grade I listed in 1958; listing number 1236753. The buildings on the left no longer exist because of the creation of Aldwych and widening of Strand in the early-twentieth century. Those on the right still exist.
