Description
View of Whitehall Court, Victoria Embankment, City of Westminster with the National Liberal Club on the right. Whitehall Court a mansion block of flats built in 1884 by Thomas Archer and A. Green in French Renaissance style. It is Grade II* listed number 1266894. The building was used as Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) headquarters until the end of World War I. Numbers 1 and 2 Whitehall Court are occupied by the Royal Horse Guards Hotel, number 3 Whitehall Court is occupied by the Farmers Club, and number 4 Whitehall Court was occupied by the West Indian Club from 1912 until 1971. It is currently split into apartments. The National Liberal Club building, constructed in 1884-1887 by Alfred Waterhouse in Portland stone is Grade II* listed number 1066072. A private members' club, open to both men and women, it was established by William Ewart Gladstone in 1882 to provide club facilities for Liberal Party campaigners. Non-political Membership was introduced in 1932, as several occupations such as judges, army officers and senior civil servants specifically forbade political declarations. In the gardens an 1884 bronze statue of William Tyndale by Sir Edgar Boehm. It is Grade II listed number 1357350. Tyndale was an English biblical scholar who translated the bible into English and was a leading figure in the Protestant Reformation in the years leading up to his execution in 1536.
