Whitehall runs south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square, the site previously occupied by the Palace of Whitehall, the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before it was destroyed by fire in 1698. In the centre of Whitehall an equestrian statue of Prince George, Duke of Cambridge cousin of Queen Victoria, by sculptor Captain Adrian Jones. The Duke served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army from 1856 to 1895, and was blamed for British failures in the Second Boer War with the Army's "lack of organization, ignorant and casual officers, inferior human material in the ranks". The statue was unveiled on 15 June 1907 by King Edward VII, and is Grade II listed number 1066108. On the right the War Office building designed in 1898 by William Young, and completed after his death in 1907 by his son Clyde Young and Sir John Taylor. Five storeys with an attic storey, the corner pavilions surmounted by two-tier cupolas. It is Grade II* listed number 1224143. The building was sold by the government in March 2016 for more than £350 million, for conversion to a luxury hotel and residential apartments. Adjacent across Whitehall Place, Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food building built in 1909 by J. W. Murray. Five-storeys composed as ground floor and mezzanine on a basement, two main storeys and an attic with three oculi. The central projecting portal has a large broken segmental pediment. It is Grade II* listed number 1066106. On the right, 36 Whitehall, the former Paymaster General's Office building until 1939 built in 1732-33, by John Lane. Significantly restored and rebuilt in 1965, it is Grade II* listed number 1357390 and now houses the UK Parliamentary Counsel Office. Adjacent, the Admiralty built in 1723-26 by Thomas Ripley, Comptroller of the Works, with the Admiralty Screen fronting on to Whitehall designed by Robert Adam in 1759-61. It is Grade I listed number 1066099. In the street are open-topped omnibuses and other motor vehicles, as well as a horse and cart.
