Title
Cottage in Albert Road
Description
Albert Road is a spinal route running parallel to this stretch of the Thames, which served the substantial commercial and residential development built around the Royal Docks during the late nineteenth century. Parts of the road were either in North Woolwich, Kent, or East Ham, Essex, originally having sequences of street numbering in two directions, but all is now within the London Borough of Newham. This view shows a cottage at 18 Albert Road believed to have been at the eastern end in between the former local police station and Frederick Cottage, their offset frontages accommodating the crescent shape of the road. These buildings were on the north side of road between today's Station Street, which once joined Albert Road, and Milk Street. The plaque in the brickwork above the ground floor bay window of Frederick cottage shows it was built in 1892 and number 18's decorative brick cornice is of similar styling to it its grander neighbour suggesting it was built at the same time. Unfortunately, for a house standing at the time for less than a decade, the cracks appearing in the brickwork between the front door and first-floor window shows evidence of subsidence, possibly due to the land having been marshland prior to development.
