Title
Interior of a building in Prince's Gate
Description
Ground-floor front room at 24 Princes Gate, Knightsbridge. The house, which overlooks Hyde Park, was built 1846-1850 by master builder John Elger to a design by architect Harvey Lonsdale Elmes. The land was acquired from the Earl of Listowel's Kingston House estate and the terrace named after the nearby Prince's Gate entrance to Hyde Park. The whole terrace was Grade II listed in 1970, listing number 1265482. Each stuccoed house has five storeys plus basement, portico entrances, first-floor balconies and cast-iron railings. The room is decorated in an Adam Revival style, with decorative plasterwork to walls and celling and elaborate marble fireplace. There is a pile of bagged rubble in the middle of the room and a large area of plaster has been removed, revealing wet-rot damage to underlying brickwork. 24 Prince's Gate was acquired by The St Nicholas Montessori Centre in 1967 and used both as a training centre for teachers and a Montessori school, St Nicholas Preparatory School. The school closed in 2019 and 24 Prince's Gate marketed for around 35 million pounds. The building lies within the Knightsbridge Conservation Area designated in 1968 and is still extant as of 2023.
