Description
View of the rear elevations of a terrace of four-storey eighteenth-century houses on the south-west side of Northumberland Street, Strand, taken from the gardens of Northumberland House. A tall brick boundary wall is running the length of the rear of the properties. Within the garden of Northumberland House can be seen mature trees. A man in a coat and hat is leaning against a tree with his foot on the rung of a ladder, which is lying face down on the ground. These house no longer exist. The Metropolitan Board of Works purchased Northumberland House in the early 1870s for half a million pounds from a reluctant Duke of Northumberland, in order to build a new road, Northumberland Avenue, connecting the Strand with the new Thames Embankment. The mansion, which was the last remaining such house built between the Strand and the river Thames, was demolished in 1874-75 together with the houses in the image.
