Description
Early eighteenth-century ceiling with decorative plasterwork in the first drawing room at Cumberland House, 85-87 Pall Mall, St James's. The oval panel has plaster garlands linked by ribbon knots and foliage. There is a panelled wall partly dividing the room. Originally built by Matthew Brettingham in the mid-eighteenth century as York House and renamed Cumberland House after the younger brother of King George III. It later became offices for the War Office and was demolished in 1911. The Royal Automobile Club now occupies the site.
