A view of the front elevation of the Burlington Hotel at 29 and 30 Old Burlington Street, Mayfair, shortly before its demolition in 1936. The hotel also gave its address as 19 and 20 Cork Street, the parallel street, and it occupied a large area between. An estate agent's sign on the facade of number 30 says the freehold has been sold. Both elements are faced in a dark painted stucco. At number 29 the entrance is in a rounded projection with Ionic pilasters supporting a half dome. At number 30 the door is in a portico with striped black and white pilasters. Two lamps stand at the pavement edge. At the left the entrance to Howard & Sons, makers of armchairs, at 31 Old Burlington Street can be seen. Several cars and two carts are parked in the street, one of the cars with registration number BXF412. The building began as a small palazzo at 29 Old Burlington Street, built by Lord Burlington for General (later Field-Marshal) George Wade in 1723 that was much modified and expanded over later years. One of the best known residents of the hotel was the nurse Florence Nightingale, who first took rooms there in 1842 with her family. Cecil Rhodes, the British imperialist, made his London home there after his appointment as prime minister of the Cape in South Africa in 1890. A later commercial block occupies the site.
